Cognitive and mindfulness-based therapies

I focus on cognitive therapies (CT) and mindfulness-based approaches in this book for several reasons. Most important, there is considerable evidence that supports their effectiveness. Also, cognitive therapy is widely available, and both CT and mindfulness practices can be implemented by using self-help approaches (see Chapter 10). Furthermore, the theories underlying these approaches provide a straightforward way to understand some key components of the psychology of depression. Finally, these methods not only are useful for symptom reduction but also have the potential to help you lead a happier and more satisfying life.

Before moving on, I want to make a very important point: These methods may not be the best for you. Please discuss appropriate therapy options with your therapist. There are too many variables for me to make a specific recommendation. However, regardless of the recommended psychotherapy, these methods may be added as a complementary approach (see Chapter 10) in most cases.

In Chapter 4, I discussed how certain thinking patterns, particularly irrational cognitions about the self, are associated with depressive symptoms. Let’s discuss cognitive therapy, which is targeted at changing those thinking patterns.
